This Tiny Wallaby, Nicknamed "Warrior," Was Found Burning Alive, Surrounded by the Bodies of Other Tortured Animals

This case of animal cruelty that comes out of New South Wales, Australia is particularly horrifying. Please read on with caution.

Two men who were on a bushwalk near Cardiff, New South Wales in Australia came upon a scene right out of a nightmare. In the bushland, where they went to seek beauty and recreation, they found the body of a dead female wallaby who had been shot in the head.

Nearby, two cat heads hung from tree branches.

And their final discovery was a tiny baby swamp wallaby, trapped under a cage that had been placed in a hole beneath burning logs. This was pure sadistic torture by someone who clearly wanted to inflict as much harm and terror as they possibly could. But so far, we have no answers as to who that someone is.

Sign the petition and implore the Belmond Police do everything in their power to find the people responsible for this cruelty!

When the bushwalkers first smelled smoke, it must have initially instilled a completely different kind of terror – drier, hotter seasons due to a warming planet have left much of Australia's lands prone to huge, devastating wildfires. But when they reached the source of the smell, they realized nothing was as it seemed. Their wildest imaginations couldn't have prepared them for two cats' heads dangling from trees, a mother wallaby dead from a gunshot wound, and her joey – who was still small enough that he would have been living in her pouch – trapped under burning logs, the cage around it turning to an inferno as the poor being intentionally lodged inside trembled in fear.

Those bushwalkers saved that little joey's life, which is now in the care of Hunter Wildlife Rescue, where he is reported to be doing well. So well, in fact, that rescuers have the 5-month-old wallaby the name "Warrior." Describing his story in a Facebook post, the rescue marveled at how trusting Warrior was towards people given everything that he had gone through.

But as miraculous as Warrior's story is, there is still someone – or multiple people – freely roaming New South Wales with a gun and clear intent to harm other living things. Until they are caught, the safety of wildlife, pets, and people in the area is in jeopardy.
