Preserve the Endangered Species Act!

Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been our nation's strongest tool in fighting extinction; at that time, the Supreme Court called it "the most comprehensive legislation for the preservation of endangered species enacted by any nation."  Now, the ESA is credited with preventing the extinction of 99% of species protected under it. Now the very law that saved the bald eagle and humpback whale is at risk of being undermined and we need your help to protect it!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed changes that would weaken the effectiveness of the ESA, hurting the vulnerable species it was meant to protect and making it harder for them to recover.

Changes to the ESA regulations that, if proposed and finalized, could devastate wildlife include:

  • Repealing the USFWS 4(d) blanket rule which presumptively protects threatened species and cuts costs by granting them the protections that apply to endangered species.
  • Revisions that make it more difficult to list imperiled species, or easier to prematurely delist them.
  • Revisions that restrict habitat protection and government cooperation—both of which are essential to conservation efforts.

The Endangered Species Act is critical to the survival of our nation's most imperiled animals and we must speak out now to safeguard our strongest tool against extinction!

TAKE ACTION

Please take a moment to contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Endangered Species Act is our nation's strongest tool in fighting extinction. In over half a century, it has saved 99% of listed species, from the humpback whale to the bald eagle.

However, this record of success depends on strong, effective regulations. I oppose any effort to undermine the ESA through regulatory changes, including by repealing the USFWS 4(d) blanket rule, making it more difficult to list imperiled species and easier to delist them, hampering the designation of critical habitat, or frustrating interagency cooperation necessary to save species. These changes would not only hurt conservation efforts but may also waste taxpayer dollars by delaying effective action until the last minute.

Your agency has proposed changes that I believe would weaken the ESA. I ask you to please uphold current ESA regulations and reject these and other proposed changes that contradict the ESA's legislative purpose: saving species. Thank you.
