Tell Gov. Cuomo to Deliver New York's Energy Future and Close Indian Point Now!

  • by: Riverkeeper
  • recipient: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo
Indian Point nuclear power plant is dangerously past its expiration date. Surrounded by 20 million people within a 50-mile radius, it's an aging, dangerous reactor like no other plant in the country. It's not engineered for the region's earthquake risk, has operated without a viable fire safety plan for years and has a terrible safety record. What's more, governments at every level -- and one of the nation's foremost experts on emergency planning -- have flatly called evacuation plans "unworkable."

As we recall the tragic nuclear meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi a year ago, imagine the impact of a similar disaster unfolding just 34 miles from Times Square.

We can replace Indian Point's electricity with cleaner and safer alternatives. Tell Governor Andrew Cuomo you support the energy policy he outlined in his State of the State Address and call on him to move forward quickly with investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and new electric transmission projects.
Dear Governor Cuomo,

In support of the energy policy you outlined during your State of the State Address, I urge you to act quickly to develop a plan and make bold investments in our energy future. With Indian Point past its expiration date, never has there been a better time to embrace the opportunity that life without this dangerous nuclear plant presents.

The Synapse Energy report that Riverkeeper and NRDC released this past fall provides a framework for replacing Indian Point, through energy efficiency, renewable energy, new transmission lines and the repowering of older, inefficient plans.

At the New York State Assembly hearing addressing the future of Indian Point, the question was not whether we should close Indian Point; rather, our leaders wanted to know how best to do it.

As a long-time advocate of shutting down this old and dangerous plant, you can lead the way and invest in developing a more efficient and safer 21st century energy supply, an investment that would create jobs and, through greater efficiency, cut our energy expenses.
