Every day, millions of children ride school buses that run on dirty diesel engines. Pollution from diesel buses makes climate change worse. It can also cause a wide range of health issues, including asthma attacks and cancer. Diesel-powered school buses don't just pollute the outdoors — diesel pollution can get trapped inside the school bus, meaning children are breathing in harmful fumes each time they ride the bus to and from school.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), Senator Patty Murray (WA), Representative Johana Hayes (CT-05), and Representative Tony Cardenas (CA-29) have introduced legislation that will support the swift transition of diesel school buses to 100% clean electric power, titled the Clean School Bus Act. This bill would provide local school districts grants to purchase electric school buses, build the necessary charging infrastructure, and provide the needed technical assistance to impacted communities that need it the most. The Clean School Bus Act would prioritize grants to school districts serving environmental justice communities and communities with poor air quality.
