Days After 19 Children Were Murdered at School, Texas Governor Will Speak at an NRA Convention in Houston.

The horrific Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, is the 27th school shooting in the United States this year. While Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a statement calling the shooting a "senseless crime," Abbott is a proud supporter of the National Rifle Association (NRA) – the organization that constantly lobbies Republicans to prevent any common sense gun laws from passing. In fact, just 72 hours after shooting, Abbott, Donald Trump, and other Republican lawmakers will speak at an NRA meeting in Houston.

The NRA does everything they can to keep common sense gun laws from passing, including lobbying Republicans to fight gun safety legislation. The Brady Campaign keeps track of the top 50 senators who have taken the most money from the NRA, with Mitt Romney coming in #1 with $13,647,676 taken from the NRA. The NRA is also acutely aware of how dangerous guns are. In fact, attendees of their very own event are not allowed to bring firearms to Trump's keynote address.

Abbott and all NRA-funded Republicans have blood on their hands. Last June, Abbott signed off on the expansion of gun rights, including one that allows people to legally carry handguns without licenses. Abbott's policy choices and continued support of the NRA show us that "thoughts and prayers" do nothing. Abbott and the NRA are complicit in the death of 19 children and 2 adults, and it's offensive that he would claim to mourn their deaths while planning to speak at the upcoming NRA meeting.
