DHS: Don't Separate Immigrant Parents from Their Children

  • by: Kevin Mathews
  • recipient: John Kelly, Secretary of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that is considering a new proposal that would make it an official policy to separate parents from their children after families illegally cross into the United States together. The aim is that if it is known that immigration officials will isolate families, it may discourage other families from trying to enter the country in the first place.

Despite the current administration's feelings to the contrary, the signers of this petition understand that undocumented immigrants are humans like all of us. No kid deserves to be separated from his or her parents indefinitely, and it's embarrassing to think the DHS might be willing to sign off on it.

Americans may disagree about how to handle illegal immigration, but we should all be united on the idea of keeping families together regardless. Mr. Kelly, we ask that you please kill this proposal before it is implemented. The United States can protect its borders without having to compromise its values.
