More Fish! Help End Overfishing in the European Union

  • by: WWF
  • recipient: President of European Parliament
In large parts of European waters more than 70 percent of stocks assessed by scientists are now overfished. Iconic species are disappearing from our seas and coastal communities are being run down. The broken policy behind this problem is up for review right now and we can act to change it.

The European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is forcing fishermen to waste huge numbers of fish. The unsustainable regulations mean fishing fleets end up having to discard up to 60 percent of their catch -- which means all those perfectly edible fish are thrown back into the sea dead or dying.

It doesn't have to be like this. Sign this petition to tell those in charge to reform Europe's fisheries policy to create healthy seas, abundant fish stocks and a sustainable livelihood for the fishing industry.
To the President of the European Parliament:

Iconic species are disappearing from our seas, and most of Europe's fisheries are overfished. These problems are being driven by the European CFP, which is forcing fishermen to discard and waste fish even though they are struggling to keep their businesses profitable.

We ask for:
- an integrated and coherent set of policies so that fishermen only catch what is needed when it's needed,

- fisheries to be managed regionally and under long-term management plans designed to ensure the recovery and rebuilding of marine ecosystems and fish stocks, and

- the principles of the policy to apply to all European fishing boats wherever they operate in the world.
