We Need Commonsense Renewable Energy Policies

Public Lands have a big role to play in our development of renewable technologies. Along with state and private lands, they harbor substantial wind, solar, and geothermal resources.

Interior Secretary Salazar has a vision of using only appropriate public lands in the transition to a clean energy future. In the face of ardent opposition from the fossil fuel industry, The Department of the Interior needs all the support it can get!

This plan includes projects such as identifying appropriate Solar Energy Study areas in Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. But it also recognizes that the least environmentally-damaging energy projects are those that never need to be built. So the plan includes measures such as incentives for energy efficiency and an efficiency overhaul of the existing grid.

Please sign this letter to Secretary Salazar to show your support for this approach to renewable energy. Make it "smart from the start"!
Dear Secretary Salazar,

I am writing in support of your common sense approach to renewable energy. We must do it "smart from the start."

I care deeply about our nation's iconic landscapes, and I also recognize that our country needs to build a clean energy future that creates jobs. Your Department has an important role to play in determining where and how renewable energy is developed on the public lands. That's why your approach to renewable energy makes sense to me: we can get started today producing wind and solar electricity in a way that treads lightly on the public lands.
The information on resource conflicts with renewable energy projects now being collected by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will lay the foundation for a hard look at whether an individual project makes sense. You've said that some places like sensitive habitats, protected areas, and other precious places are not appropriate for industrial renewable energy development. I urge you to use this new information to clearly spell out how the BLM will make that decision.

In the face of unfair attacks from those who favor the single-minded energy policies of the past, I know that you have the best interest of our climate and wild lands in mind. Please continue to make sure that your commitment to our precious places shines through in developing lasting renewable energy!

Thank you for your time.
