Crossing Coast Hwy 101 is dangerous, since there are no crosswalks across Coast Highway near the BVAS Nature Center.
Pedestrians are constantly crossing back and forth at this location, for fishing, bicycling, walking, and other activities. Many locals park at the Nature Center and cross Coast Highway to fish from the bridge. With the new path on the west side of Coast Highway, the number of pedestrians and cyclists has increased; many cross over to the Nature Center to use the facilities. Over the past few years, traffic has greatly increased on the Coast Highway, becoming more and more dangerous for pedestrians to cross.
BVAS now owns the land across the street and has begun regular work parties to remove trash and engage in habitat restoration. Participants must be able to safely cross the highway; they need access to the Nature Center for parking, restrooms, and tools.
The City of Oceanside owns the BVAS Nature Center and parking lot and therefore has a stake in this issue.
