Refugee Children Risk Being Left Behind

Five-year-old Saba is an Afghan refugee who loves going to school. She is in first grade at a UNHCR-supported school. She is on the path to a better future, but sadly her opportunity is not common. Most refugee children face huge challenges and risks simply to get an education.

Refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school than non-refugee children. Only half of these vulnerable children have access to primary education, compared with a global average of more than 90 percent. And as they get older, the gap widens: 84 percent of non-refugee children attend middle school, but only 22 percent of refugees have that same opportunity. Just one percent of refugees attend college compared to 34 percent globally.

Access to quality education in a safe environment can help protect children, boost their confidence and prepare them for a brighter future. Stand with the UN Refugee Agency in its mission to make sure every child gets an education.

Ensuring that refugees have access to education is the best way to prepare them for a bright, independent future. I believe this challenge must be addressed as the number of school-aged refugee children continues to rise.

As an American, I believe we must help people in their time of greatest need and put them on the path to success.
