A Waste Mountain Full of Discarded Clothes is Destroying Chile’s Desert. Pledge to Buy Less Fast Fashion This Holiday Season!

Black Friday is rapidly approaching. While massive corporations offer discounts to boost their profits, the planet is in trouble. Industries that encourage constant consumption -- like the fast-fashion industry -- are rotting our ecosystems and causing massive harm to the people and animals that live in them.

Sign now to pledge that you will reduce your ecological impact and buy less this holiday season!

In 2020 alone, Americans spent a whopping $9 million on the annual shopping event -- up 21% from the previous year. The day after Thanksgiving sales have become so popular that to some, the sales are as important as the holidays themselves. But endless consumption has consequences, especially for our ecosystems and non-human creatures who inhabit them.

There is no better example of the dangers of industries that encourage constant consumption, and the fast-fashion industry in particular, than Chile's fast-fashion waste mountain. Each year, in the beautiful Atacama desert in Chile, over 39,000 tons of clothes end up in an enormous mountain of waste. Clothing shipments to Chile overwhelm local traders, with the majority unable to be sold. Shipping it out of the country requires paying tariffs, which local traders typically can't afford. This results in an ecological nightmare: a giant pile of clothing that looms over the otherwise pristine Atacama desert.

The average piece of clothing can take over 200 years to biodegrade and in some cases, can be as toxic for the environment as discarded plastics. It is crucial that, whenever possible, we do our best to reduce our purchases from such a wildly unsustainable industry. Send a message to fast-fashion companies everywhere and join us in pledging to buy less this holiday season!
