Stop A Dangerous Bill That Could Wipe Out Animal Cruelty Laws

A monumental threat is facing animals in our country! Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Congress that could be disastrous for animals.

This year has been historic for animals, with the Supreme Court of the United States upholding the strongest farm animal protection law in the country, California's Proposition 12. But this hasn't stopped lobbyists for the pork industry who have now turned to Congress, pushing for federal legislation to undo not just Proposition 12, but potentially any state sales laws aimed at addressing animal welfare and a host of other concerns.

The "Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression" (EATS) Act, S. 2019, is designed to wipe out state laws that ban the cruel cage confinement of egg-laying chickens, mother pigs and baby veal calves, and the sale of animal products derived from such cruelty. If passed, it could also destroy hundreds of other protections against terrible cruelties—like abuse of dogs in puppy mills, killing of animals for the wildlife trade and painful experiments inflicted on animals for cosmetic testing. But it doesn't stop there. State laws on a vast range of additional agricultural issues are also at risk, including pesticide application on fields, arsenic in food, protection against lead poisoning, chemicals in baby food, pollution standards for spraying sewage on crops, flammability standards for cigarettes, and child labor.

Animals (and people) need your help to stop the unraveling of even the most basic health and welfare protections.
TAKE ACTION

Please send a message to your members of Congress urging them to oppose the EATS Act, which could undermine hundreds of state laws and have devastating consequences for animals and people.

Dear Legislator,

I am writing to urge you to oppose the "Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression" (EATS) Act, led by Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA). This bill is a huge federal overreach, and a rehash of the notorious "King amendment"—the infamous measure that former Rep. Steve King tried unsuccessfully to enact as part of the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bills, generating overwhelming bipartisan opposition.

The EATS Act, S. 2019, could wipe out multiple state laws aimed at promoting animal welfare and food safety, as well as state laws on many other issues including pesticide application on fields, arsenic in food, protection against lead poisoning, chemicals in baby food, pollution standards for spraying sewage on crops, flammability standards for cigarettes, and child labor.

A diverse set of more than 170 groups strongly opposed the King amendment, including the National Governors Association, National Conference of State Legislatures, National Farmers Union, National Dairy Producers Organization, Humane Society Legislative Fund, Consumer Federation of America and Natural Resources Defense Council—plus hundreds of federal and state legislators, individual farmers, veterinary professionals, faith leaders, and legal experts.

I hope you will stand firmly against this massive federal overreach by opposing the EATS Act and doing all you can to keep it out of the Farm Bill. Thank you for considering my views.
