We are a group of parents the Belham Primary School concerned about air quality in the area and among other things, working to encourage the families at the school to adopt active travel to school. This is with the aim of reducing car use in the area and improving air quality, with the additional health benefits for the children involved.
We are aware of overcrowding on the Bellenden Road side of the school at morning drop off and afternoon pick up. We're aware this affects not only the safety of the children and parents associated with the school, but also local residents trying to pass the school at these busy times. Improving the area would encourage more children, and local residents to walk and be able to do so in safety.
As a result, we're asking Southwark Council to consider the following:
- a wider pavement on the Bellenden Road side of the school - additional 1m of pavement
- create a build out for the school bins so they do not block any of the new pavement
- request the bus stop be moved to the position it was in during the building works (further up Bellenden Road)
- propose that cones be placed in the road in the interim - at least for the busy times (8.30-9am and 3-4pm)
- request that the existing zebra crossing on Bellenden Road be raised (like the one on Maxted Road) to make it more visible to drivers and encourage them to slow down.
We're hoping to collect support from parents and local residents to show that we're not alone in our concerns - if possible, please note that you live in the local area.
- initially we have a deadline of the 21st October 2018, as we'll be applying for a Cleaner Greener Safer grant from Southwark for the work - but signatures are also welcome over the following months as we press the case!
