Ice cream is supposed to be a treat that make us feel good, not destroy the environment and kill thousands of innocent animals!
The Unilever Company, the owners of Breyer's Ice Cream, and Nestle, the owners of Dreyer's Ice Cream, use palm oil in almost all of their frozen desserts and other snack items. Palm oil is not only bad for human consumption in large doses, but it is causing catastrophic deforestation and species loss. The worst part is, that big corporations like Nestle and Unilever do not care about your health or the health of the planet. They only care about lining their pockets with more money. Please sign this petition and tell them that we will not accept this type of greed and that we demand they stop using palm oil in their products and switch to sustainably grown oils!
Tens of millions of tons of palm oil is produced annually, accounting for over 30% of the world's vegetable oil production and is found in 40-50% of household products including, shampoo, crackers, ice cream, and toothpaste. 85% of all palm oil is grown, produced, and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia and most of the time, it is not grown sustainably. Palm oil plantations can also be found throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America.
The palm oil industry not only causes deforestation and habitat degradation, but it is also linked to climate change, animal cruelty, and the abuse of indigenous people's rights in the countries where it is produced. In order to have palm oil plantations, thousands of acres of land and forests have to be cleared away. According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production. This type of habitat destruction is leading to the extinction of many species including the orangutan, which could be extinct in 5-10 years, and the Sumatran Tiger, which could be extinct in less than three years. In addition, the Sumatran forests are home to the last remaining population of Sumatran Elephants, which are critically endangered with fewer than 3,000 individuals left. Since 1985, 70% of their forestlands have been lost to deforestation mostly due to the clearing of forests for palm oil plantations. This has to stop!
In addition, palm oil is a partially hydrogenated oil that is high in saturated fat and low in polyunsaturated fat. This means that consumption of it in high doses can promote heart diseases.
