United States Government Must Help Enforce the Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Demarcation NOW!

Add your voice to the February 13, 2006 Peace March in Washington, D.C.! Tell the US you want immediate implementation of the Eritrea Ethiopia Boundary Commission’s border decision to demarcate the border and ensure peace in the Horn of Africa!

After a bloody 2-year border war and failed international mediation efforts, Eritrea and Ethiopia signed the Algiers Peace Agreements on 12 December 2000.  The African Union, European Union, United States and the United Nations witnessed and guaranteed the Agreements, which called for the creation of the independent Eritrea Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC), whose sole mandate is to demarcate the Eritrea-Ethiopia border.   The EEBC issued its final and binding decision on the delimitation and demarcation of the Eritrea-Ethiopia border on 13 April 2002.  Eritrea has fully accepted the court’s ruling. Ethiopia has rejected it.

Nearly four years later, Ethiopia has violated numerous Security Council resolutions and the Algiers Agreements, and continues to defy international law.  In violation of the UN Charter, Ethiopia is also militarily occupying  sovereign Eritrean territories, including Badme.  Due to Ethiopia’s rejection of the EEBC’s final and binding decision, its demarcation directives, orders and procedures, demarcation activities have come to a complete halt.   Consequently, the EEBC has closed their offices and left the area.

The United States, as one of the guarantors of the Algiers Agreements, must fulfill its legal and moral obligations and enforce the EEBC decision without preconditions or further delay.  The United States must force Ethiopia to respect the rule of law.  The US must act now to avoid another disastrous war in the Horn of Africa, which would greatly undermine and jeopardize its efforts in the global war against terrorism.

Sign this petition and tell the US government you want them to act NOW! Get the US to use its power to ensure demarcation! Speak up before another war resumes!
