Congress: Ban Assault Weapons and Large Capacity Magazines NOW!

When the Federal Assault Weapons ban expired in 2004, assault weapons and large capacity magazines were suddenly legalized, unless banned by state or local laws. And tragedy after horrific tragedy — Aurora, Sandy Hook, Orlando, and Las Vegas, a survivor of which died during the recent Thousand Oaks massacre — has shown us the carnage and suffering these weapons can inflict on entire communities.

You can help save lives today by joining Brady in urging Congress to support a new, comprehensive assault-weapons ban. Bills pending in Congress would ban over 200 military-style assault rifles, and improve on the previous law by adding large capacity magazines capable of accepting 10 or more rounds.

Law enforcement have seen an uptick in criminal use of assault weapons and large capacity magazines since the ban lapsed fourteen years ago. And a 2018 poll showed almost 70% of Americans favor a ban on assault weapons.

We know assault weapons bans work: one study showed a more than 30% drop in recovered assault weapons in states with bans.

So what is Congress waiting for? You can help make a life-saving change: Join Brady and implore Congress to pass these bills without delay.
IT'S TIME: BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS AND LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINES AND MAKE AMERICA SAFER.

Dear Member of Congress,

Thousand Oaks, California just joined Parkland, Newtown, and Las Vegas as yet another community forever scarred by senseless gun violence.

The horrific mass shooting in the Borderline Bar and Grill claimed 13 precious lives and devastated another community. Tragically, a survivor of Las Vegas lost his life in Thousand Oaks. This insanity must stop. It's long past time for Congress to act.

One way to reduce the carnage is to ban assault weapons and large capacity magazines. A study of mass shootings between 2009-2015 showed that in shootings where such weapons or magazines are used, 155% more people are shot, and 47% more die.

S. 2095 and H.R. 5087 are bills in Congress right now that would ban the sale, manufacture, transfer, and importation of military-style assault weapons and large capacity magazines. These bills are a step in the right direction, and I urge you to support their passage and co-sponsor these measures without delay.
