Protect Our Pets from "Hot Car" Deaths

Did you know you could go to jail just for trying to save a dog's life?

Summer is upon us, and that means some of us will head to the beach, others will light up the BBQ and unfortunately, someone will leave their dog in a hot car. Even in cooler temperatures leaving a dog in car could be deadly. In fact, when it's just 70 degrees outside the thermostat can rocket to 90 inside the cabin. A temperature that could quickly turn fatal for our beloved pets.

There are only 10 states where it is legal for a good Samaritan to rescue an animal that is literally cooking to death. Of the remaining 40, more than half lack legal protections for those who would intervene when they come upon an animal in distress!

The safety of our pets, like the safety of our children shouldn't be left to the state. And no one should have to risk going to jail to save a life. What we need is a federal law that guarantees that all citizens have the right to save an animal when it is locked in an "auto oven". Please sign this petition and let's tell Congress to pass a national hot dog law this year.

But don't stop there, find out if your state allows all citizens - not just public officials - to be heroes for dogs in hot cars. And if not start your own petition. Together we can make it safer for America's cats and dogs.

Dear Congress,

Every summer, dogs and other pets die because some careless owner has left them locked inside a car. Many of these animals could be saved if bystanders knew they were protected from prosecution. No one should go to jail for being a hero. That’s why I believe it is time to pass a national “hot dog” law that will protect good Samaritans from legal action if they step in to save an animal locked in a hot car.
