Westbard Deserves New Investment—And the Improvements, New Housing Options and Better Protections Redevelopment Will Bring

Westbard is a highly affluent area of Montgomery County, yet its streets are not pedestrian friendly, its residents shop at an unsightly retail center surrounded by a sea of asphalt, its service workers can’t afford to live there, and its natural resources are among the county’s worst. We believe the Westbard community deserves far more than this status quo, and we look to councilmembers to set a new and better course by adopting a Westbard Sector Plan that includes and encourages responsible redevelopment.
We believe Westbard residents deserve a modern community with a welcoming retail center that supports a range of businesses, space for community events, places to dine close to home, more walkable streets, new environmental protections and new housing options for a range of incomes. It is incumbent on the Council to adopt its revised Westbard Sector Plan to promote new investment in the Westbard community and allow for reasonable redevelopment.

RE: Support for the Westbard Sector Plan

Dear Montgomery County Council,

Westbard is a highly affluent area of Montgomery County, yet its streets are not pedestrian friendly, its residents shop at an unsightly retail center surrounded by a sea of asphalt, its service workers can’t afford to live there, and its natural resources are among the county’s worst.

We believe the Westbard community deserves far more than this status quo, and we look to councilmembers to set a new and better course by adopting a Westbard Sector Plan that includes the envisioned redevelopment in the draft plan.

We believe Westbard residents deserve a modern community with a welcoming retail center, space for community events, places to dine close to home, more walkable streets, new environmental protections and new housing options for a range of incomes.

It is incumbent on you, the County Council, to adopt its revised version of the Westbard Sector Plan that promotes new investment in the Westbard community and allows for redevelopment. Please do not let this opportunity for the Westbard community pass by.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned Petitioners

Update #37 years ago
The petition has been submitted to the County Council.
Thanks for signing. The vote on the final Westbard Sector Plan resolution is May 3.
Update #28 years ago
Great progress but let’s get even more! Please help by asking family members and friends to show support for the Council's revised plan. New residential units in Westbard have been reduced to just 800 more than the 1982 plan, with lower height limits near neighborhoods.
It’s a good compromise for those who want some new redevelopment but not the density proposed by the Planning Board. Please share this petition with others who want more than the horribly outdated status quo.
Update #17 years ago
Our progress is steady, but we need more support. Please ask family and friends sign. Council worksessions on the sector plan begin tomorrow.
PHED committee has already reduced residential density by half and further capped building heights, so redevelopment should be more appealing for many concerned about densities.
