Send the 132 Rescued Animals of the Nicolas Bravo Zoo to a Sanctuary

When the Mexican authorities realized that the owners of the Nicolas Bravo Zoo weren't taking care of their animals, they took action.

The zoo in Tulancingo is considered by animal activists to be one of the worst in the country. That unwanted classification as well as a deadly mauling by zoo lion that left one zookeeper dead, probably spurred Mexican officials to take a closer look at what was happening behind the zoo's enclosures.

What they found was unacceptable. Dozens of animals — including primates, reptiles, bears and big cats — were living in dire conditions. Many enclosures for the animals were found to be unfit. And when the owners were asked to provide documentation, they were unable to do so.

That's when they finally decided to swoop in and rescue the more than 130 animals. Officials rounded them up and shipped them to a veterinary facility for treatment but, instead of really being saved, most of the menagerie will be shipped to a new zoo where they will likely be just as miserable.

Care2 applauds the Mexican authorities for stepping up to the plate and saving the animals from the Nicolas Bravo Zoo from a horrible existence. But we think they can do more. Instead of forcing them to live in captivity in another zoo. We think it's time these animals enjoyed freedom.

Please sign the petition and ask, Mexico to release the 132 animals to a sanctuary where they can live the rest of their lives in relative peace.
