Fight Climate Change for Beach Birds

Whimbrels can be found along the coasts of the US and Mexico during the winter and in the Arctic tundra of Canada in the summer. They use their long curved beak to hunt for shellfish and forage for berries, and males can be seen performing dramatic flight displays during mating season. But climate change is threatening their habitats – rising sea-levels may cause coastal habitats where they live in the winter to be flooded, while warming arctic temperatures are impacting their summer habitats.

Imperiled wildlife need us to immediately reduce emissions to prevent the loss of vital habitats to climate change.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a new rule that would limit carbon emissions from power plants on-site, which will help the US reach necessary climate goals and reach net-zero emissions by the middle of the century.

Dear Administrator Regan,

Thank you for initiating this rulemaking to limit CO2 emissions from power plants. This rule, when combined with other regulatory actions and resources, can make huge strides to significantly reduce emissions and help the United States reach our climate goals.

Wildlife and people across the country are already feeling the drastic consequences of climate change and pollution. Increased wildfires are severely impacting wildlife's habitat and food sources, warming temperatures are harming waterfowl and fisheries, and burning fossil fuels is contributing to smog and acid rain's harm on species across the country. Climate change is also threatening Indigenous subsistence traditions.

While there is no replacement for a transition to renewable energy, when implemented responsibly and with community input, the rule can be a crucial step forward to immediately reduce emissions.

Thank you for initiating this rulemaking, and I appreciate your attention to tackling the climate crisis for people and wildlife.

Sincerely,
