The FBI recently announced that it would be placing greater priority on combating domestic terrorism in the United States, saying recent increases in white supremacist violence – like the killing of 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh last October – are a "great threat to national security".
Since Oct., the FBI has made 66 arrests linked to domestic terror, more than arrests made with links to international terrorism.
It's clear that right-wing extremist violence is on the rise. At least 50 hate crime-inspired murders were committed last year – and, according to the Anti-Defamation League, all perpetrators had links to the radical right.
We are in crisis but President Donald Trump and his administration continually downplay the threat of domestic terrorism.
Trump went so far as to direct the Department of Homeland of Security to defund programs dedicated to preventing domestic terror last November.
