Japan: Save the Bluefin Tuna!

The Bluefin Tuna's beauty, size, speed and power has long been appreciated by people around the world. Artists, scientists and fishermen alike have expressed their admiration for the Bluefin Tuna, an apex predator and vital part of the ocean's ecosystem.

But now this amazing species is in danger of extinction due to overfishing, with the current population a shocking 97% below its historically recorded peak.

Bluefin Tuna sushi is a prized delicacy in Japan, and Japan consumes 80% of Bluefin Tuna caught worldwide. As such, Japan is a key player in deciding the future of this irreplaceable species. Please sign this petition to ask Japan to join efforts to save the Bluefin Tin, by taking part in an international recovery plan.

25 tuna-fishing countries plus the European Union have agreed to come together to take urgent action. This action would include strict fishing quotas. Japan is reluctant to get involved with the agreement, but without their help any efforts will be severely limited.

Fish stocks both locally and globally are no longer sustainable without careful management. Japan's beloved Bluefin Tuna will not survive much longer under the current levels of fishing.

Please sign this petition to ask Japan to join in efforts to help save the Bluefin Tuna by participating in the international tuna recovery plan. If enough people sign, it will send a clear message that the international community wants to work together on sustainability. We can't save the Bluefin Tuna without Japan's help, and we need to act now.

Japan's Ministry of the Environment:

The actions being proposed by 25 tuna-eating countries and the EU to save the Bluefin Tuna require international cooperation. With population levels now 97% below their recorded peak, the problem is dire and urgent.

Please engage with this recovery plan to ensure that the Bluefin Tuna survives as a species.
