Liberty University is Protecting Rapists and Attempting to Silence Survivors by Punishing Those Who Report

Yet another private, religious, conservative university is attempting to silence sexual assault survivors. A recent horrific report by ProPublica shows that Liberty University threatened students who came forward with reports of sexual assault and rape with punishment, accusing them of "violating the school's code of conduct." In another instance of egregious misogyny, a university is prioritizing rapists over survivors.

Sign now to tell Liberty University: stop silencing survivors! Grant amnesty from conduct violations to students who report being raped!

Liberty University has a strict ethics code, which includes limitations on underage drinking and premarital sex. Now, it is using this ethics code to harm survivors and protect assaulters. One student who reported her assault was fined $500 for alcohol consumption and was ordered to attend counseling. How many rape survivors have not gotten justice or help to heal because it might hurt their academic standing?

Coming forward to report a sexual assault can be extremely emotionally taxing and triggering as it is. By making this experience even more dangerous for students, Liberty University is creating an environment that protects and enables rapists and punishes survivors. These practices tell victims of sexual assault and rape -- who are disproportionately women, trans/non-binary, people of color, and/or queer -- that they do not matter, and that Liberty University is not on their side.

There is no excuse for a University to enable and protect rapists. Sign now to demand that Liberty University amends their practices and creates an immunity clause so that victims can come forward without fear of retribution.
