I Stand With Servicewomen

Today more than 400,000 women serve in the Armed Forces and defend our nation. Their families and dependents also serve and sacrifice. Yet they are denied insurance coverage of abortion if they become pregnant as a result of rape and incest. Instead, they are made to pay out-of-pocket for the care they need because federal insurance coverage is only available if the woman's life is endangered by the pregnancy.

This policy is unfair and unjust given the sacrifices of our military women, wives and daughters. Our government provides civilian women, like federal employees, with insurance coverage for abortion and it should provide servicewomen and dependents with the same care. This is about basic fairness.

I stand with servicewomen and urge Congress to change this unfair policy and ensure that the Shaheen Amendment becomes law this year.
Letter to Non-Supporters

Dear [Representative],

Our military women put their lives on the line for our country and they deserve the same care and benefits as other women.

But I was shocked to learn that if both a federal employee and servicewoman are raped and become pregnant, the federal employee has insurance coverage for abortion care but the servicewoman does not. Our government forces the servicewoman to pay out of her own pocket. This law is unfair, indefensible and must be changed.

We may not all agree about abortion but there is broad support for abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Military women, wives and daughters should have the same insurance coverage as federal employees, when facing a pregnancy caused by rape, so that they too can make the decision that is best for them and their families.

I urge you to ensure that the law is amended when Congress finalizes the FY13 defense authorization bill, and that our servicewomen and their family members are treated equally. They've earned it.

Letter to Supporters

Dear [Representative],

For too many years, our servicewomen have been denied the health care coverage they've clearly earned and deserve.

Today, if a servicewoman is raped and becomes pregnant, the military denies her insurance coverage for abortion care. Instead, she--unlike other federal employees--has to pay from her own pocket for the care she needs. That's unfair, indefensible and utterly unacceptable.

Fortunately, this past May the Senate Armed Services Committee adopted in a bi-partisan vote, an amendment by Senator Jeanne Shaheen, to the FY13 National Defense Authorization Act that would provide military women, wives and daughters with insurance coverage for abortion in cases of rape and incest.

It's time to correct this injustice and we need your help. Please help ensure that this amendment become law this year.

Thank you for your continued support of our servicewomen.
