Approximately 75% of bird species across the North American continent are slowly dying off, their population numbers dropping and moving closer and closer to
a massive extinction event.Sign the petition to demand increased government protections for endangered species, wildlife, and the environment! This includes birds like chickadees, red-winged blackbirds, great egrets, little blue herons, peregrine falcons, and more. And these birds aren't just dying off on the periphery of their territory:
most of their communities are dying off in the middle of their prime habitats.Between 1970 and 2017, the continent had
already lost upwards of 3 million birds. But the disturbing trend has only
continued and worsened since then.
A multitude of culprits have contributed to this problem. Climate change is changing and disrupting their food sources and breeding grounds. Human development projects - including clearing land for farms - are tearing down their ecosystems. And pesticide use is poisoning them.
And now, it's all set to get so much worse. Donald Trump has been hell-bent on attacking the environment and tearing apart wildlife protections. He even recently directed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to
redefine what constitutes "harm" to endangered species - just so that corporations can get away with more
oil-drilling and logging in old-growth forests. He's also urging the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make it easier for corporations to engage in
deep-sea mining that would decimate marine ecosystems.
Birds are connected to everything and
an indicator of the health of ecosystems overall. This is a frightening moment not only for them, but also for humanity and the rest of the world.
We must be doing everything we can to save North American birds - not make the situation worse for them. Sign the petition to demand the Trump administration immediately stop its attacks on endangered species, wildlife, oceans, and the environment!
