Tell Congress Not to Cut Life-Saving International Programs!

Childhood should be a time for play and learning, but after a decade of violent conflict that is not always the case for a child growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Every day around the world, nearly 21,000 children under-five die mostly from preventable causes.

Three-quarters of all of these child deaths are due to preventable causes and could be avoided by simple, low-cost interventions.

Thankfully, things are beginning to turn around for children in the DR Congo. IMA World Health and others have been training health workers so that fewer newborns are dying unnecessarily and fewer mothers are bleeding to death following childbirth.

But this progress is being jeopardized. The U.S. House of Representatives is on course to slash life-saving humanitarian programs by nearly 20 percent.

Take action today: Urge Congress to instead adopt the funding level proposed by the administration for international humanitarian and poverty-focused development assistance for fiscal year 2014.
Dear [Representative],

Childhood should be a time for play and learning, but after a decade of violent armed conflict, that is not always the case for a child growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thankfully, things are beginning to turn around for children in the DR Congo. IMA World Health and others have been training health workers so that 74 percent of births are now attended by qualified personnel. This means that fewer newborns are dying unnecessarily and fewer mothers are bleeding to death following childbirth. More families are sleeping under bed nets too, thanks to these same organizations.

But this progress is being jeopardized.

Please do not cut funding for international humanitarian and poverty-focused programs. Instead adopt the funding level proposed by the administration for fiscal year 2014.

Sincerely,
