It was announced earlier this year that Defra would phase out the badger culling and move onto vaccination of cattle. This is a welcome move. However, a new badger culling site has now been approved in Gloucestershire and the culling will take place from 1st of June to 31st of January. Badgers are culled here in Great Britain in order to curb the spread of TB to cattle. Farmers argue that culling badgers works, whilst badger campaigners argue that it doesn't. Whether it works or not irrespective, badgers are sentient animals that want to live and avoid suffering and death as much as we do. They are a native predator here in the UK. Horrible, cruel humans have already wiped out most large native predators that were once here in the UK, such as wolves and bears. We cannot lose any more of our beloved badgers.
Animals' lives should come before humans' livelihoods. The farmers can get other jobs and use other, more effective and humane methods of TB prevention in cattle, the badgers can't simply go and get another life.
People often use livelihoods and jobs as excuses for animal cruelty but, if we turned this around and it was a group of people who were threatening someone's job unintentionally, would we say it was just to murder them? Badgers may not have the same intellectual capability as humans, but they are still sentient beings, and they cause far, far, far less harm to the environment than humans do, especially farmers and those who eat meat and destroy forests (etc).
Farmers often claim to care about animal welfare and the countryside. What a joke! They need to think with their hearts and not their wallets and stop supporting badger culling!!!
It is cruel, it is unethical, and vaccinations and other methods of TB control and prevention for cattle could be even more effective. Don't believe me? Ask some of the scientists who have done more research, and they may also be in favour of other methods...
Humane, non-lethal badger deterrents and protection, such as repellents, electric fences, the use of (rescued and well-cared for and loved) guard dogs and the use of guns to scare badgers away, as well as putting cattle in barns or stables at night and giving them cut grass (?), could all be used instead...
Farmers, if you really care passionately about preserving the British countryside, please find ways to humanely coexist with native, iconic British wild animals, true, native residents and preservers of the countryside's ecosystem.
Defra, UK Government and farming bodies, we demand that you permanently end ALL badger culling NOW!!!!! We threaten to boycott dairy and meat until you do!!!! If the badger cull is not stopped ASAP, I threaten to do all I can to get back at dairy and beef farmers financially and through activism!!!!!!
