Tell EPA to prevent a mining catastrophe in Alaska

We've just learned there has been a catastrophic breach in an earthen dam holding back billions of gallons of contaminated water and mining waste at the Mount Polley copper and gold mine in British Columbia. The unleashed waste is now cutting a poisonous path of destruction through pristine forests and is spilling into waterways where salmon spawn.

That mine has chilling similarities to the proposed Pebble Mine, which would be gouged out of Alaska's spectacular Bristol Bay wilderness — home to the greatest wild sockeye salmon runs on the planet, an astounding diversity of wildlife and Native communities that have thrived there for thousands of years.

Send an emergency message to the EPA telling them to stop the Pebble Mine.

The company responsible for designing the failed Mount Polley dam has also been hired to design the dams at the Pebble Mine!

The Mount Polley disaster is a horrifying glimpse at what could be in store if the EPA fails to follow through with its proposal to block mega-mining in the Bristol Bay wilderness.

NRDC has been ratcheting up pressure on EPA to do the right thing and stop the mine — but we need your help to mobilize a massive public outcry that will compel the agency to protect Bristol Bay forever.
To: Gina McCarthy, EPA Administrator

I am writing in strong support of your proposed determination that would block the massive, ill-conceived Pebble Mine project. Your agency's thorough study concluded that the Pebble Mine poses significant -- even "catastrophic" -- risks to this irreplaceable natural treasure.

On the basis of that study, your agency has proposed specific restrictions at the Pebble site that would protect this ecologically sensitive area, its resources and the people of the region from the grave and unacceptable risks associated with this toxic mega-mine.

The Pebble Mine would generate billions of tons of contaminated waste, devastate up to 90 miles of streams, destroy thousands of acres of wetlands and threaten the world's greatest wild salmon runs -- the linchpin of the Bristol Bay ecosystem and the generator of 14,000 jobs and $1.5 billion in annual revenue.

Your agency's proposed determination will put a stop to this unacceptably massive and unavoidably destructive venture, and I urge you to adopt it. Please finish what your agency has started by finalizing the proposed restrictions that would effectively stop the Pebble Mine.

Sincerely,
