Take Action to Protect Pronghorn from Methane Pollution

Pronghorn that roam our western lands are known for being the fastest land mammals in North America—but they cannot outrun the harmful effects of methane-producing oil and gas facilities.

Methane is a climate super-pollutant with more than 80 times the planet-warming potential over carbon dioxide in the short-term. It's commonly emitted as a byproduct of oil and gas production, along with smog-causing and toxic pollution harmful to wildlife and people alike.

Unchecked oil and gas drilling is doubly dangerous to pronghorns. Energy developments are already fragmenting critical habitat for many species across the country—and these operations add insult to injury by leaking large amounts of methane pollution into the air.

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing stronger measures to cut methane pollution—but they need to hear from you to put bold measures into action.

Please lend your voice for pronghorn! Tell the Environmental Protection Agency to take swift action to cut methane emissions from oil and gas operations across the country.
Cutting methane pollution from the oil and gas industry is the quickest, most cost effective way to slow the rate of climate change happening now and protect community and wildlife health. That is why I support the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposed updated rule to cut methane and other harmful pollutants from oil and gas operations across the country. My community has waited too long for bold action to cut methane, and we need these protections now more than ever.

Reducing methane emissions is of the utmost importance for wildlife that continue to be negatively impacted by oil and gas development that fragments their habitat and puts additional strain on threatened species through accelerating climate change.

Cutting methane pollution will also have profound effects on millions of people across the U.S. experiencing record heat. Slowing today's unprecedented rate of warming can help avert our most acute climate risks, including megafires and extreme weather. New oil and gas sector pollution limits will also help prevent greater suffering from severe health impacts caused by smog and exposure to cancer-causing toxic emissions, a particular threat to communities of color and those living near facilities.

Now, the EPA must move quickly to enact solutions for pollution and finalize the strongest possible safeguards—such as eliminating pollution from flaring, requiring regular monitoring at smaller wells with leak-prone equipment, instituting community monitoring, and requiring zero-emitting pneumatic controllers and pumps.

Every day that passes without strong federal methane rules is a missed opportunity to reduce climate and air pollution from the oil and gas industry and protect the health and well-being of communities and wildlife across this country. We cannot continue to wait. We need the Biden administration to use all of its authority to enact strong solutions for pollution that protect our health, advance justice, and fight climate change.

Sincerely,
