Help Protect More Habitat for Migratory Birds

The U.S. Congress is now considering the bipartisan Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Enhancements Act of 2022, an important bill that would provide a major funding increase to migratory bird conservation, as well as more equitable access to the funding.

This new bill would boost the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA) — the only federal grants program specifically dedicated to the conservation of migratory birds across the Western Hemisphere.

Saving migratory birds requires collaboration from experts and communities throughout the Americas. Since 2002, the NMBCA has supported more than 500 conservation projects in 36 countries, on more than 4.2 million acres of critical bird habitat. Nearly 400 migratory bird species benefit from these efforts, including the Red Knot and Cerulean Warbler.

Please let your U.S. Congressmember know that birds matter to you! Ask them to co-sponsor the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Enhancements Act of 2022.
Dear Senator/Representative:

Recent research revealed that North America's bird populations have declined by 3 billion birds since 1970. As your constituent and one of the more than 45 million Americans who enjoy birds, I ask you to co-sponsor the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Enhancements Act of 2022, introduced to reauthorize the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA). This bipartisan bill is co-sponsored by Senators Ben Cardin and Rob Portman, and will provide needed funding to conserve migratory birds and their habitats. The NMBCA is the only source of federal funding dedicated specifically for bird conservation throughout the Americas. It is a proven, effective matching grants program that coordinates and funds the conservation of neotropical migratory birds and their habitats throughout the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Since 2002, more than $75 million in grant funding has gone out across the United States and to 36 countries, funding 628 projects and impacting 5 million acres of critical bird habitat. Migratory birds provide tremendous value and enjoyment to millions of Americans. They also make a significant contribution to the US economy. The 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation reports that birdwatchers spend close to $41 billion on birdwatching equipment and travel within the United States, creating 666,000 jobs and $14.9 billion annually in local, state, and federal tax revenue. More than 17 million Americans travel to see birds, putting millions of dollars into local economies. Thank you for considering this request to co-sponsor the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Enhancements Act of 2022 to conserve birds and their habitats.

Sincerely,

[your name]
