At 98 years old, Estelle's bubbly nature persists despite her challenges. Like the majority of our meal recipients, she lives alone… has outlived her friends and loved ones… and depends on a wheelchair just to get around her studio apartment. She's truly come to rely on Citymeals — and neighbors like you – for the delivery of vital Emergency Food Packages.
Each box includes a tasty selection of essentials — including chicken, salmon, brown rice, applesauce and oatmeal — plus treats like hot cocoa and low-sugar cookies, and ensures our most vulnerable neighbors have food on hand during the bleak winter months.
A self-described "showbiz kid" who taught herself to sew elaborate costumes and furiously studied opera, Estelle's memory has faded a bit over the years as she tries to recall song lyrics and shows she loved. She's rueful knowing her once active days are long behind her. "I'm a dancer, I miss that," she admits.
Her broad smile disappears as she thinks about the present. While Midtown bustles and thrums, neighbors come and go, Estelle has only become increasingly isolated and alone.
Our regular deliveries provide her — and nearly 20,000 frail aged New Yorkers like her — with a respite from loneliness, and our Emergency Food Packages give them security, especially during the unpredictable winter months.
