A 12-Step Program to Break America’s Oil Addiction

"America is addicted to oil."
-- President Bush, State of the Union 2006

America consumes over 19 million barrels of oil per day. More than 70% of that is for transportation; we burn most of our oil as gasoline in our cars, trucks and SUVs. Like any addiction, our oil dependence has serious consequences. We are at war for oil. Tailpipe emissions contribute to global warming. Oil extraction destroys forests and communities in countries like Nigeria, Colombia and Ecuador.

It's time for change... It's time to break our addiction.

Oil permeates our lives - from the cars we drive to heat for our homes, to the plastics in our computers and offices. So where do we start?

Let's start by Jumpstarting the auto industry: the single largest cause of our oil addiction comes from passenger vehicles. Ford Motor Company's vehicles guzzle more gas than any other automaker in the country. Ford's global warming emissions threaten our environment while rising gas prices threaten our economy. That's not American innovation. That's just bad business.

We demand that our nation's leaders, both civic and corporate, make a real commitment for change. It's time to take action, starting with automakers like Ford Motor Company.

Join us in a 12 Step Program to break our dependence on oil. We've admitted that we have a problem. It's time to start the solution.

Dear Mr. Ford,

Why does Ford produce the least fuel-efficient vehicles in America? I am disappointed in Ford's lack of vision and action for a clean energy future. Instead of working to end America's addiction to oil, Ford continues to jeopardize our future by producing out-dated gas-guzzling vehicles.

It's time for change. We want Ford to be a leader in the auto industry and usher us into the green century with clean, zero-emission vehicles that really do live up to your advertising campaigns. We are calling on Ford to get back to what made it an American icon: innovation and quality.

Sincerely,
