Tell Congress: Protect Wolves in the Lower 48

Wolf recovery across the United States is in jeopardy.

In the past two years, federal protections for wolves have been removed in the northern Rocky Mountains and western Great Lakes, leaving management decisions to individual states. States in these regions have approved aggressive hunting and trapping seasons designed to drastically reduce recently recovered populations. In 2012 alone, more than 1,200 wolves were killed under the state plans. State management programs are as gruesome as they are ineffectual.

U.S. Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) are circulating a letter opposing hasty removal of wolf protections and U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) has already signed on as a lead co-signatory.

Sign today to call on Congress to oppose the removal of Endangered Species Act protections of wolves in the lower 48 states, then call your member of Congress at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to sign onto Reps. DeFazio, Markey and Grijalva's letter.
I am writing to you to ask you to sign onto a letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, being led by Reps. DeFazio, Markey and Grijalva, asking the agency to retain protections for wolves in regions where they have only just begun to recover, including the Pacific Northwest, California, the Northeast and the southern Rocky Mountains. I vigorously oppose removal of Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in these regions and hope you will join me in this opposition.

Studies following reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park found that wolves play a critical role in ecosystems, benefitting a host of species from songbirds to beavers to pronghorns. As a significant draw for tourism, wolves also benefit people by stimulating the economy. I would like to see wolves restored to suitable habitat across their former range.

Please sign onto the letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service opposing removal of protections for wolves being led by Representatives DeFazio, Markey and Grijalva.
