When Anne was young, she earned the nickname "Annie the Riveter." She grew up with three brothers, which prepared her for tough work as an actual riveter at the Morganite Brush Company during World War II.
These days, Anne is still in the Bronx and still tough, but manual labor is behind her. It’s clear the years have worn on her, especially after winning a tough battle with breast cancer. At 90, she suffers from neuropathy in one leg and struggles to get around. Her brothers have passed and her children are themselves elderly and unable to care for her.
Citymeals on Wheels has become her lifeline.
Anne is only one of thousands of homebound elderly who struggle to get enough to eat. Many of these vulnerable older neighbors suffer from chronic illnesses that make it hard get around their home, let alone to the grocery store. Too many live below the poverty line and can't afford groceries even if they could make it to the market.
