Dear Mr. Burd,
I am writing to urge Safeway to stop selling farmed salmon until the salmon farming industry comes up with a way to farm salmon that does not harm the environment, coastal communities and wild salmon. I am very concerned about the health and environmental risks of farmed salmon: [Your comments: Which health and environmental risks of farmed salmon concern you the most?]
While I applaud Safeway's desire to be an environmentally responsible company, true environmental responsibility goes beyond simply recycling plastic bags and cardboard boxes. Safeway is not living up to its stated policy of being an environmentally and socially responsible business, because Safeway continues to sell farmed salmon despite the known environmental, social, and human health risks the product poses.
To be environmentally and socially responsible, Safeway must stop selling farmed salmon. [Your comments: Why should Safeway stop selling farmed salmon]
A study, which is being considered the most thorough analysis of farmed and wild salmon to date, found that in most cases consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month poses unacceptable cancer risks. The study, published in a highly respected scientific journal, found that farmed salmon contain up to 10 times more PCBs and dioxins than wild salmon. These chemicals are linked to cancer, high blood pressure, strokes, immune-system problems and reproductive disorders.
Salmon farming also poses known environmental risks. Disease and parasites that multiply in the net cages spread to wild fish outside farms. Antibiotics in the fish feed pass along the food chain, contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Fish farm waste is released directly into the ocean, passing on contaminants and often smothering marine life.
Consumers and responsible businesses hold the key to getting salmon farming companies such as Stolt Sea Farms and Heritage Salmon to clean up their act. As a concerned consumer, I urge you to be the environmentally and socially responsible business leader you claim to be, and immediately stop selling farmed salmon in all Safeway stores.
I would appreciate a reply to my concerns.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
