Ensure the Existence of a Pier in Emerald Isle for Perpetual Public Use

Bogue Inlet PierWe support the efforts of the Town of Emerald Isle to ensure the perpetual existence of a fishing pier in Emerald Isle. We understand that it will probably take the collective efforts of the Town of Emerald Isle, Carteret County, the State of North Carolina, the North Carolina Aquarium, and the Federal government to accomplish the desired outcome. We encourage all of these organizations to be an active participant in arriving at an acceptable solution.

Fishing piers throughout North Carolina are fast disappearing. The financial reality in today’s coastal real estate market is that ocean fishing piers are likely to be lost forever unless a public entity acquires and operates these facilities.

Bogue Inlet Fishing PierOcean fishing piers are important to the local population, but are used mostly by day and overnight visitors to the area, much like State and Federal parks throughout North Carolina. The retention of a pier in Emerald Isle would provide access to the ocean for recreational fishing, parking and access to the ocean for people to enjoy the public beach, an adjunct facility for the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, and a research location for the Marine Science departments of several of the State’s major universities.

Please make every effort to make this project a reality.
