Tell Congress: Protect Families From the Plastics and Petrochemical Industry

Toxic pollution from the plastics and petrochemical industry threatens the air we breathe and the water we drink. Families across the U.S. are exposed to health-harming industrial chemicals, like benzene and vinyl chloride, across the plastics supply chain. Children are particularly vulnerable. Our government must protect us!

Join Moms in calling on Congress to protect families from plastics industry pollution, halt the buildout of new plastics facilities, and transition away from single-use plastics.

Dear Congress,

As a parent concerned about children's well-being, I urge you to stop plastic pollution at its source by supporting policies that reduce plastics production and protect human health.

Every step of the petrochemical and plastics supply chain—from extraction  of fossil gases to processing, production, transport, use, and disposal—smothers communities with carcinogens and other hazardous pollutants.

The pollutants released during petrochemical and plastics production include particulate matter, benzene, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, chloroprene, PFAS, vinyl chloride, and trichloroethylene—to name just a few. Living near petrochemical and plastics facilities can increase the risk of cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and developmental issues. It can also affect the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and reproductive systems. Children and infants are especially vulnerable.

Plastic production is expected to triple by 2050. This will cause exponential increases in toxic chemical pollution, harming our health and our climate. This is not the legacy we want to pass on to our children.

Now is  the time to insist on strict standards for the petrochemical and plastics industry. So much is at stake. I am calling on you to reject attempts to roll back EPA rules that protect families from pollution and chemical disasters, to say no to additional petrochemical and plastic facility buildout (no new permits!), and to support policies that rein in  plastic production.
