Robert W. Coleman Elementary School in Baltimore, Maryland introduced daily meditation to their students in 2015 including breathing techniques, yoga and a mindful moment room in place of detention. All children at Coleman start and end their school day with a 15-minute guided meditation over the intercom. They also have the chance to practice yoga during and after school. since making the meditation room available, Thompson said, she rarely sees children for disciplinary issues anymore, since it's introduction the principal had zero suspensions since the room's creation where in the previous year she had four.
Students need to cope with some of the same stresses that adults face, and these mindful meditation techniques allow them to turn negative emotions into positive ones.
We urge Mayor Randall Woodfin, The Birmingham City Council and Birmingham School Board to take a look at what they are doing at Robert W. Coleman Elementary and now Patterson High School in Baltimore and look at introducing the practice into our schools so this generation will have skills in conflict resolution that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
This is the first step in the Orange Ribbon Campaign, because enough is enough.
