Support a Basic Minimum Income to End Poverty in Canada

15% of Canadians live in poverty — over 4.9 million people. In 2016, roughly 235,000 individuals in Canada experienced homelessness. In a wealthy country such as Canada, this is unacceptable.

The Green Party of Canada has long supported a basic minimum income, or a Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) for all. A GLI would eliminate poverty, combat homelessness, greatly reduce healthcare costs, and ensure dignity for all Canadians.

A GLI is aimed at providing a regular payment to every Canadian, regionally set at a level above the poverty line to encourage additional income generation. No surveillance or follow-up would be required, eliminating enormous bureaucratic costs.

Canadians are ready to embrace a basic income that guarantees each and every one of us a chance at a dignified life. Sign on today to support ending poverty in Canada through a GLI.

Far too many children in Canada grow up in poverty. Child poverty rates are unacceptably high among new Canadians, Indigenous peoples, and single-parent households. Canada ranks a dismal 37th on a list of 41 wealthy countries for children having sufficient access to nutritious food.

A GLI would fulfill Canada's human rights commitments by granting every family access to the income required to put nutritious food on the table, giving each child a fair shot at a healthy and promising future.

With increasing automation, it is widely understood that unemployment will rise to new heights around the world, causing further problems for struggling families. Canada should look to a GLI as a means of adapting to the inevitable loss of thousands of Canadian jobs.

Sign this petition to back the Green Party's call on the federal government to mandate a GLI — and end poverty in Canada.
