Parents of Bucknell Athletes appeal to the Bucknell administration to allow for in-person attendance at all home outdoor events

As parents of student athletes, we have witnessed firsthand the sacrifices that have been made in order to play at a Division 1 institution. This sacrifice begins at a very young age and encompasses all aspects of a student athlete’s life. Our commitment to them, as a parent, has always been to support them in any way we can and the most important way we show how much their sacrifice means to us, is being present at their competitions. This emotional bond is something that stays with each of them forever and it lets our children know that we support them in more than just their sport, but also in life.

This past year has been so difficult for everyone and these students have done everything that has been asked of them, on campus and off, in order to play the game they love. We simply ask that they not be penalized further by banning their loved ones from attending games, especially when the state of PA, the NCAA and the Patriot League is allowing it. This can be managed effectively and should begin immediately.

We, as parents will also commit to safety protocols that will ensure that this can be done in a reasonable way. In addition, we are committed to volunteering our time to assist in overseeing that fans follow these guidelines to ensure a safe environment. The state of PA has set forth reasonable allowances for spectators to attend sporting events and we ask that you follow these allowances. We believe that with the efficacy of the vaccine, testing, mask-wearing, social distancing, as well as reduced positivity rates, there is no reason to continue this ban.

I’m sure you agree that in these very difficult times, the importance of being present for our student athletes cannot be measured in wins and losses, but rather by the emotional support that is truly needed at this time.

We look forward to hearing back from you with a successful solution to our request.
