Free Unjustly Imprisoned Bahraini Activists

The pro-democracy protests in Bahrain have, for the most part, been peaceful affairs. But even as Bahrain's King Hamad called for an atmosphere of dialogue, he ordered the life imprisonment of eight prominent Bahraini activists.

The prisoners, who are all Shiite Muslims, include some of the most respected human-rights activists in the entire Arab region. Because they refused to accept the violations of justice clearly present in Bahrain, King Hamad's government has sentenced them to prison for life.

The imprisonment of the Bahraini activists is a corrupt application of the court system to intimidate and eradicate the country's opposition. Currently, 400 protesters are still on trial for crimes they may not have committed.

Call on Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to free the imprisoned activists and to stop the egregious violations of human rights in Bahrain today.
I am writing to urge you to release the eight Shiite activists whom your regime recently sentenced to prison for life.

Your statements about furthering future dialogue are directly contradictory with this behavior. In addition, your imprisonment of 400 more activists only reinforces the oppressive nature of your current leadership.

The people of Bahrain deserve human rights. I impel you to free Bahraini activists from prison today.
