These Oil Trains Have Caused Death and Destruction, and Trump Wants to Make Them Even More Deadly

When it comes to the philosophy of "Safety First," President Donald Trump comes in dead last. The Trump administration has just rolled back safety rules regarding oil tanker trains that would have required trains carrying oil to install special breaks.

Sign to ask the Trump Administration to continue to implement these safety rules and save lives.

The regulations were originally passed by the Obama administration in 2015 after a string of serious accidents in North America involving trains carrying oil and other chemicals — the worst of which left 47 dead. Others incidents resulted in no casualties but caused devastating oil spills, mass evacuations, fires, and serious environmental damage.

But despite the deaths and destruction and the clear necessity to implement better safety protocols, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) under the Trump Administration has killed the regulation. Their reasoning? The costs outweigh the safety benefits. Tell that to the people of Waterson, Wisconsin who had to evacuate their homes after a train derailment near their town, or to the city of Mount Carbon, West Virginia whose river was contaminated with oil after a spill, or the citizens of more than a dozen other areas that were affected by these accidents between 2013 and 2017.

It's the latest example of Trump and his henchmen disregarding policies that protect the American public in favor of rolling back regulations that help Big Business make millions.

So when the PHMSA says these safety measures just aren't worth the costs, what they are really saying is that you aren't worth it.

Tell the Trump administration that you are worth it! Sign the petition and demand that PHMSA's decision is reversed. Our lives are not less valuable than an oil company's bottom line.
