On August 4,2019 we lost a member of our family, Yaneli Morales, unfortunately she was hit by a car that was coming down East ave and Jensen in the evening. Although she was not necessarily on the crosswalk she wasn't that far from it. As to what has been brought to my attention this isn't the first fatality or accident happen on that same street. The lighting there is horrible, and visibility in the evening actually gets worse. While I think more than just lights should be implemented, this is a start and not just for this street but for the whole city and other busy traffic streets in Livermore.
What I would like to have done is at least have a couple more light posts within a certain distance from the crosswalk, speed bumps I was told may not be an option but it's worth a try, flashlights on the actual crosswalk and the speed limit sign apart from being on all day be in a more visible area instead of in between the leaves, anything to enhance the safety so no more tragedies happen.Even though that intersection is 30mph, drivers very well go faster than that, knowing there's a school near, apartment buildings, a church, a store, where pedestrians are always at crossing. According to my measurements the only lights around that street is the one lamp post where her memorial is on the corner of Jensen and the stop light on Dolores.
I understand this subject has been brought up before at the City Council meeting but has not been approved to fix the situation. These passed weeks since the accident, we've been going to the Memorial in the day, we have even seen drivers cut pedestrians off halfway crossing on the crosswalk, because the drivers are in to much of a hurry and even when the lights are blinking they don't care.
This is something that I believe has to get done right away so no other families have to mourn the loss of a loved one just because the council chooses to very well remodel the community center and build more houses but cant fix a couple of our streets with just better visibility and more enhancement with drivers. How many fatalities is it going to take for them to do something about this. I feel an obligation to fight for this petition because I believe Yaneli's death should have something positive come out of it. Having that said please I urge you to help me, help us have a safer Livermore like I remember it was once.
