Oppose President Bush's Unlawful Opening of Our Mail

This petition is for members of Congress to see that we, the informed and aware postal workers of America are not going to take this lying down.  Opening our customers' mail without warrants will not be tolerated.
To whom it may concern:

The President, in his recent signing statement accompanying the 2006 postal reform bull, has asserted his right to open people's mail under any circumstances he deems necessary.

This is a direct violation of the law, and an unlawful usurpation of the powers of Congress.  We oppose this statement, and the criminal actions it claims to authorize under the guise of protecting human life, as a total violation of the principles of American democracy.

As postal workers, we know that the esteem we are held in by the general public is due to our high ethical standards and our commitment to protecting the security of their private communications.  If we were to turn away and not fight this violation of our freedoms, we would be abandoning our role as the protectors of American speech and democracy.

We are asking you to fulfill your obligations as representatives of the American people to protect our rights and our hard-won freedoms.  Please stand up to the President on this, and if you can't make him stop in Congress, take this issue directly to those who can make him stop: The American People.

By publicizing this issue, we can highlight the gross violations of American democracy by this President and his administration.  Please take the opportunity to do what is right, and serve your office faithfully and honestly in this regard.

Sincerely,

America's Postal Family
