Wanting to defund the Special Olympics was just the start. Betsy DeVos is failing students with special needs.

For several years in a row, Betsy Devos has proposed eliminating all federal funding for the Special Olympics. While this funding is safe (for now), her actions to imperial programs and protections for students with special needs underscores how the Education Secretary tries to undermine public schools.

As part of their 2020 fiscal year budget, Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump said they want to cut more than $7 billion from education programs. They also propose keeping funding for IDEA stagnant at post-recession levels.

IDEA provides children with disabilities the same opportunity for education as those students who do not have a disability, but it has never been fully funded - denying students much needed resources and opportunities. Currently, the federal government is only meeting less than 14% of its financial promise. That's not enough.

The DeVos/Trump budget proposal sends a dangerous message to students: If you need extra help, you're on your own. Don't expect our government or public schools to help you. That is NOT what we should be telling children.
