Stop The Poison Drop Over New Zealand

How much longer can "clean and green" New Zealand withstand the continued use of Compound 1080? The poison is meant to target invasive pests like possums, but it has caused the painful deaths of innumerable dogs, birds, deer, horses, cows, sheep and invertebrates. Even the discovery of poisoned Kiwi birds hasn't been enough to stop the aerial drop of poison-laced pellets in New Zealand -- a country which accounts for about 90% of the global use of the poison.

New Zealand resorts to indiscriminate aerial drops to cut costs, but the people and wildlife of New Zealand can't afford these poisonous shortcuts. New Zealanders are tired of the untargeted killing, the poisoned water sources, and the nation's dependence on Compound 1080.

Tell Prime Minister John Key to prohibit the use, production, sale, importation and exportation of Compound 1080.

Dear Prime Minister John Key,

I'm writing to urge you to work toward the prohibition of Compound 1080 in New Zealand.

Although the poison is meant to target introduced pests like possums, the indiscriminate aerial drop of poison-laced pellets has caused painful deaths for innumerable dogs, birds, deer, horses, cows, sheep and invertebrates. New Zealand resorts to these massive aerial drops to cut costs but by doing so it is endangering the people and wildlife of New Zealand through primary and secondary poisoning and through contamination of water sources. Careful monitoring would be better than indiscriminate distribution, but in the end, there's no safe way to monitor this class A poison other than through its prohibition.

I urge you to direct the Parliament to pass legislation to prohibit the use, production, sale, importation, and exportation of Compound 1080, and furthermore, I ask you to advise the Environmental Risk Management Authority to stop importing and tolerating the poison.

Thank you for your attention.
