Only 129 Left: Act Now to Save the Mississippi Sandhill Cranes

In the late 1800's, non-migratory sandhill cranes were so abundant they were considered a pest. Today, only 129 non-migratory Mississippi sandhill cranes remain in the wild. Degradation and extensive habitat loss of the fragile pine savanna have nearly eliminated these birds from their homes.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) provides essential funding for vital habitat protection at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge — the only place where the tiny population of remaining birds are found.

But, Congress consistently underfunds this important conservation program — even though it doesn't cost taxpayers a dime — and the proposed budget would reduce programs by over 105% from enacted levels. This would be devastating for Mississippi sandhill cranes, and roll back critical protections that are crucial to helping keep this unique bird fight against extinction.

Call on Congress today to help protect this endangered bird by fully funding LWCF, one of our nation's most effective conservation programs for the past 50 years.

Subject: Fully Fund LWCF Right Away

Dear Representative/Senators,

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has played a critical role in protecting fragile habitat for America's cherished species for over 50 years. This program -- which doesn't cost US taxpayers a dime -- protects so much about what makes America wonderful and has been crucial for connecting people to nature and our natural resources.

But now this program needs funding. Shortchanging LWCF means undermining long-term conservation planning that can make a real difference to the recovery of vital species like the Mississippi sandhill crane.

I urge you to fully fund LWCF now for all of the species that are critical to our natural spaces.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
