1 in 3 GoFundMe Donations Go Toward Funding Health Care Costs

The CEO of crowdfunding website GoFundMe, Rob Solomon, recently explained that roughly one-third of the money donated on the platform ends up going toward health care bills for thousands of Americans every year. Insurance is supposed to be the automatic crowdfunding we all pay into, yet we are forced to do things like this because insurance is so spotty and expensive.

It is a sad state of affairs when so many people have to go online to beg for money merely to keep themselves and their loved ones alive and healthy. It is shameful and completely unacceptable that people have to panic and beg when a major healthcare expense comes up.

Right now, the number of uninsured Americans is at a four-year high. Even though the Affordable Care Act has not been repealed, Republicans have taken measures to exclude people from participation on the state level, including by shortening open enrollment periods and deliberately causing confusion around the enrollment process.

While the ACA was a godsend for millions, it is not enough — especially because of how vulnerable it is to sabotage.

It is long overdue for federal lawmakers to pass legislation creating a single-payer, public health care option for all Americans regardless of their financial status. Add your name to our petition to tell our elected leaders in Congress to take action today!
