Dear Senator:
You can help put an end to the devastating effects of our nation's number three killer - stroke. Please co-sponsor and urge your colleagues to pass S.1909, the Stroke Treatment and Ongoing Prevention (STOP Stroke) Act recently introduced by Senators Thad Cochran (R-MS) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA).
More than 700,000 Americans will experience a new or recurrent stroke this year and 160,000 of them will die. In addition to being a leading killer, stroke is a major cause of long-term disability, leaving many Americans unable to work and carry out their daily activities like they used to. Not only is stroke a threat to public health, but it is also a threat to our nation's economic health. Stroke is estimated to cost our nation $53.6 billion this year.
Unfortunately, the public knows very little about this devastating disease and too many health care facilities are not equipped to treat stroke aggressively - like other medical emergencies.
The STOP Stroke Act will dramatically improve our nation's stroke care. The legislation will authorize funding to conduct stroke education campaigns; provide critical resources to implement stroke care systems; establish a clearinghouse to support communities aiming to improve stroke care; offer medical professional development programs in new stroke therapies; and, conduct valuable stroke care research.
Please give Americans the best chance possible to survive this deadly disease by supporting the STOP Stroke Act. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
