help save Mercedes, the last polar bear in captivity

PLEASE HELP MERCEDES and ensure she is the last polar bear kept in a zoo It is widely accepted that polar bears are one of the most unsuitable animals to be kept in captivity. However, Edinburgh Zoo may be going back on a promise made in 2003 not to replace Mercedes when she dies and is now considering getting more polar bears!
PETITION TO EDINBURGH ZOO

At 24, Mercedes is the last polar bear to be exhibited in a UK zoo. She has been kept in a small, barren enclosure in Edinburgh Zoo for the last 21 years. Her cubs were sent to another zoo and her partner, Barney, suffocated on a plastic toy thrown in by visitors. Mercedes has been showing signs of distress and abnormal behaviour such as repetitive pacing and swimming for several years.

It is widely accepted that polar bears are one of the most unsuitable animals to be kept in captivity. However, Edinburgh Zoo is considering going back on a promise made in 2003 not to replace Mercedes when she dies and is now considering getting more polar bears!

Please sign this petition asking Edinburgh Zoo’s Chief Executive, David Windmill, to

  • Improve Mercedes’ enclosure as a matter of urgency
  • Commit to not getting any more polar bears in the future

PLEASE RETURN THE PETITION TO ADVOCATES FOR ANIMALS' OFFICE, 10 QUEENSFERRY STREET, EDINBURGH, UK, EH2 4PG - NO LATER THAN TUESDAY 31 AUGUST 2005
